COLLECTION ORIENTE OCCIDENTE / SPRING-SUMMER 09

When I still hadn’t risen even a few inches from the floor, I don’t know why but I used to draw small branches with a large number of rounded leaves with small birds fluttering around them, small flowers in gardens with strange shapes and in strawberry, green, brown and reddish tones.

At the time of drawing this, someone said that they looked like images taken from eastern tales and I thought that this had been no coincidence as I had seen very few things that reflect such tales and I didn’t remember having seen anything like this before, so I don’t know why those diminutive drawings came from those very things, the languor of those oriental landscapes.

Perhaps coincidence has made this emerge again, the colours that you paint with as a child, smells that remind you of times gone by, determined forms that cover space, perhaps all those things and the need to share those feelings have made me take up this childhood idea again and express it in the present.

That sentiment is what I have tried to cast, taking those colours, creating through those forms and feeling that even those smells have been left reflected on the paper.

The oriental forms of the collection are mixed with western ones, and through the use of buttonhole and “plastón” bobbins, two garments are fused into only one, thus creating trouser-dresses, trouser-shirts bestowing the garment with volume and languor, depending on the tissue being used. There are puffed shapes that combine with “maho” collars of large dimensions and small sleeves.

The way of tying the garment shall also be important and this will be done through simple knots that strangle the tissues.

The appliqués, belts and especially the jewellery coming from Murano glass will also be of great importance. These small jewels are incorporated inside the garment itself, making those jewels an indispensable piece within the design of the aforesaid garment, thus giving considerable importance to a handcrafted jewel and stemming from idea that without this it could not work.

Not only the handcrafted pieces but also the belts are tied through the use of strips and knots. For that reason the knot as such becomes very relevant in this collection.

The satin tissues in the colours of strawberry and dry leaf green together with reds and browns are combined with cotton poplins of 100% printed fabric that are subsequently serigraphed and embroidered, always using the same range of colours, thus creating a stunning sensation due to both the mixture of tissues and that of colours.

If this combination is striking, the 100% natural linen tissues that are textured with the appearance of rubber, metal and chintz are no less so and this turns the linen into something that very much forms part of the present and granting it an appearance that has nothing to do with what we are accustomed to, a tissue with an appearance that is completely different from the linen that we see every day.

I have wanted to leave that commercial exodus from the east that we experience day by day behind and approach the sensitivity of the forms in order to incorporate them into western forms.

This is a collection to be felt and even to be smelled.
