COLLECTION: ANATOMY IN FOUR TEMPOS
AUTUMN-WINTER 08-09
The theory of the four moods developed by Hipocrates maintained the human body is full of four basic liquids (moods): phlegm, blood, yellow bile and black bile. According to his theory, health depended on the balance of those moods in the body and illness came from an excess or a lack of one of these four. He also maintained that a relation existed between liquids and the body, the seasons of the year and the elements.
Aristotle expanded this theory by defending the idea that the shape of the body also reflected the activities of the soul. He became interested as to how the moods were related to the formation of the body and the mind and concluded that mental and emotional illnesses had a physical origin.
