BAUHAUS COLLECTION
SPRING-SUMMER 08

The collection is inspired by the movement that is known by the name of Bauhaus, which comes from the name of the school in Germany where it was developed, whose precursor and teacher of the aforesaid school was W. Gropius who was joined by important and representative figures from the art world, the most prominent of whom were the architects Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer; the artists Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Gyorgy Kepes and Josef Albers; recognised painters such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky; and the weaver Anni Albers.  The figure of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was also important, as she was the designer of the prototype Frankfurt kitchen.
From 1923 onwards, the Bauhaus school orientated its initial romantic thinking – based on the inoffensive union between the proletariat and fine arts – in a new direction influenced by scientific ideas.  It was at that time when functional and attractive products that could be acquired by people belonging to any social class began to be elaborated, thus creating links between industrial design and this artistic current.  The demand for more and better goods propelled and obliged the art workshops and the labour force to become industrial designers.

From these ideas, the movement started to have an evidently experimental character that included study programmes at art schools, investigations based on an ample variety of means such as tissue, photography, metalwork, painting, sculpture, the design of furniture and set design; as well as one of its best specialities: architecture.  This came to the fore on employing the new materials and technology to the maximum.

These ideals and ideas are those which have made me create a functional collection, with certain touches clearly inspired by the architecture, painting or sculpture of this movement, trying to give expression to its craftwork spirit that is creative but simple through and through.  It is a collection where the “lorzas” nerves remind us of the lines that appear in Gropius’s architecture, the volume and the yellow and orangey colours remind us of Kandinsky’s paintings, the pleats and folds of rigid straight lines remind us of many architects and some painters from this group and the soft and mouldable knitwear dress models of that craftwork that was the base of the movement, the diligence and work of those craftsmen and craftswomen who went on to become designers.

Bauhaus represents habitable houses that are full of art for everyone, just as my collection strives to be comfortable clothes for everyone, without forgetting about the design, that you can put on every day.

We are going on an excursion to Bauhaus, are you coming?...
